New Musical Discoveries 2019 --Blooming Prejippie Zine

This post corresponds—but is NOT faithful—to Gab & Jam Episode 50 Insights from a Music Blogger with Guest Lori Stratton from Stratton Setlist. It might be noteworthy to establish that this episode is our first episode with an in-studio guest (https://youtu.be/yjiyJNYUZ_Y ), Lori Stratton from Stratton Setlist.

We have our first ever in-studio guest, Lori Stratton, founder of the Stratton Setlist blog. She is a concert and album reviewer, who has traveled locally, as well as internationally just to catch a good concert.

Support Local Bands:

  • After Hours Radio (alt rock) https://www.facebook.com/ahrband/ owns its own venue, The Late Station (Ypsilanti, MI) and is having an 1 year anniversary party on March 2, 2019, where are hosting several bands.

  • The band, Honey Monsoon, is hosting a release party on March 22, 2019 at the Loving Touch ( http://thelovingtouchferndale.com/events ) for their “Opal Soul” album (review: http://bit.ly/2IxMVxn ). Friday, March 22 (The Loving Touch, 22634 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale, Doors: 7 p.m. Tickets: $10)

Fun Facts:

  • Lori’s husband is her blogging partner, who not only takes photos at concerts, he also writes some blog posts, and helps with scheduling.

  • Lori and her husband often go to destination concerts and has gone as far as Scotland, London, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Toledo to see concerts. However, she loves to support the local bands in and around the Detroit area (and in the mid-west).

  • She is open to all genres of music.

A Bit About Her Blogging Process:

  • The iPhone is her go-to tool and uses the voice memo and notes apps, especially.

  • Often, she researches the setlists in advance of the show (using the website http://www.setlist.fm ).

  • Usually, uses the “immersion” process, where her and her husband listen to a lot of a band’s music online before interviewing them and/or before attending their concerts.

  • More recently, uses the TEMI Transcription website (https://www.temi.com/ ) to get quick, cost-effective transcripts of interviews.

Background the Led to Blogging:

  • Began as a journalist.

  • Always loved music. (Thanks, in part, to big brother Steve.)

  • Started attending concerts 10 years ago for fun.

  • Mentor told her to document these experiences through a blog (which she started 3 years ago).

  • Over time, she has changed her focus from simply sharing her experiences and love for the music to beginning to shine the spotlight on telling each band’s story and on showcasing their creativity.
