Here’s the backstory…

—Okay, so our family watched a movie called Spree this last week and it highlighted one of the issues that has been on our minds during this last patch of time and that is trying to please people without any real consideration of your own needs and values.

I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I assure you that we are in no danger of going on a mad killing spree (as is portrayed in this movie). However, we KNOW that perhaps some of the things that we have considered—and have tried—have been more in an effort to get folks to dig us than to fulfill the needs of our souls.

Take for instance my old morbid fascination with caring whether people unsubscribed. —Did you know that several times in the past 3 years, I have considered changing the Welcome Letter that people receive after they subscribed, because I realize that it is artsy and not very specific about the experience that they will have by being on our email list? The experts that I follow say that we should be crystal clear and up front. But what we realized is that we ARE messy and artsy, and that our train of thought DOES wander. I mean, in the letter, we promise not to waste folks’ time…..

Not chasing THAT anymore…. 🐁

What we decided is that the KIND of folks that we want to hang out with would LOVE that quirky, meander into uncharted areas and it is THAT which would make them WANT to stick around! So, three years into sending the letter, I have only edited it once and that was to change the social media links that had grown outdated. —But that’s not the ONLY instance where I realized that IF we change, it would be to conform to some algorithm, or for some social media bot crawler (that would be offended by bad language), or some Puritan nerd, who is just NOT our people. –We are realizing that it really is NOT a thrill to “win over” folks who don’t really get us, so we’re not doing that shit anymore. 🙄

We have two BIG goals; one is to stay authentic to our own vision and another is to grow our tribe. We have started to be very clear that we are doing the former FIRST and that growth will have to come as folks feel as if we are the people they want to be with—and that we can’t court them ONLY because they have the ability to make our numbers tick up.

My final thought is that, if you are STILL sticking around after we’ve told you that we’re taking you on a journey that we’ve NEVER been and don’t know where it will lead, then we KNOW that you’re OUR kind of people.
