We’re at the time of the year where you stop to consider what you want and set some goals.   For the D.I.Y. Rock Star, mental health and physical health are USUALLY at the top of our list.  –We’ve got a wonderful post on 7 self-care activities HERE, but here’s more general advice on how to “do” self-care wisely.

Here are thoughts to ponder: ⭐️



1. Physical health

We say this year after year, but you’ve only got one body, so take care of it, because you won’t get another.  Whatever you need to do to feed it well, to exercise it well, and to keep your healthiest mindset, do it!  You WON’T get another, so make the BEST of what you are given by doing the BEST by it.

Being an artist is different….

Performing and looking your best requires MORE than most folks do.  We have to look good, be in a good mood, and perform well in order to keep our cache. 


You only get one body, so…

Try to eat right, exercise, don’t overindulge on a regular basis.


We talked about the idea that performing takes a lot out of you—performing live, on music videos, and on livestreams—so keeping your body physically-fit is going to help you achieve your long-term performance objectives. Sometimes, you don’t realize how much energy it requires until you’re in the thick of things.  However, if you keep active BEFORE the performance season, you will be prepared when it comes.  You want to feel ready to give your best in all arenas.

2. Mental health

Things to consider:

·      While you NEED to get results

(to show you are a successful as a D.I.Y. Rock Star), you STILL want to REMEMBER that you got into creating, so that you could express who you are BEFORE you get anyone else’s opinion. –THIS mindset ALONE will keep you dialed in when difficulties come. –Ultimately, you need to center yourself BEFORE you look to outside confirmation.  –Remember, if you enjoy creating your music, THAT has to be the first marker of success—no matter how that art is received.  You have to maintain confidence in what you create, no matter HOW it is received by the outside world.


·      Lean into your OWN happiness

(even when NOONE is paying attention, when no one has responded, and when you get criticized by others.) Having folks NOT believe in you can be a drain, so knowing that you are making moves for your OWN goals –and NOT just for Instagram—is going to help you weather any low-algorithmic storms.


·      Exercising is an early win

NOT to push the point, but exercising helps you feel like you’ve won early on.  By getting that physical activity in first thing in the morning or by the end of the day, then this is a victory that I can count in my D.I.Y. Rock Star journey.  This will help you maintain what you’re looking for, weight-wise, or just feeling better about yourself and achieving your goals for your day; it’s a good early win.

3. Self-care strategies

3.  One of our other strategies for defeating that mental tenderness is to continue to put things out.  –We are FIRM believers in the idea that sharing an overwhelmingly large catalog of content will help solidify your corner of the internet—no matter WHO is NOT standing with you.  Eventually, you become UNDENIABLE.  –We KEEP saying it, but if you do a Google search for “Prejippie,” you will find a body of work that affirms our justification for contributing to the greater world of cultural material. THIS is proof that you are doing what YOU can do to move your creative vision to the goal line and that’s really all you can control.


4.  Find approaches that work for you–and everyone is different—so try a variety of ways until you find what works.
